Gavin Shields - About Me

I am an undergraduate student at Stevenson University. My home town is West Deptford, New Jersey. After I graduate I plan to complete my masters in communications.

Football

While at Stevenson, I played four years of collegiate football. In my senior year I gained the role of captain voted on by my peers as well as accomplish being an All-Conference Linebacker. Football has taught me discipline, working with a team, and leadership qualities.

Activities and Classes

While at Stevenson I was able to partake in informative classes as well as get real world experiences from them. Throughout the portfolio you will be able to see many different projects and work I have completed while at Stevenson.

Internship

As an internship, I was able to work at St. Paul's, a private school in Maryland. At St. Paul's I worked with the alumni office researching and contacting former almuni to support upcoming events.

Football

At Stevenson University, football was a highly esteemed and treasured part of my life. I devoted innumerable hours to lifting weights, skill-building, and analyzing game film in order to reach my maximum performance level as a collegiate athlete. Throughout this process, I built strong relationships with my teammates, thus creating life-long friendships that I will be grateful for always. While completing my masters, I plan on using my 5th year of elibibility to compete again.

Stevenson Coursework and Activities

Integrated Marketing

Integrated marketing was a class I took where we created a marketing plan for a nearby business. Gracie Randalstown Jiu Jitsu was the business we created a marketing plan for and they actually used it. 46 pages later and an entire plan was developed. It ended up being very successful. I loved this class as it taught me the ins and outs of marketing, while also providing real world experience.

Communications

With communications being my major, I had a plethora of great classes teaching me different techniques and theories on how to be an effective communicator. To highlight a couple, organizational communication provided inside knowledge on how to speak within an organization effectively. Nonverbal communication taught me just how effective body motions and hand signals can be when engaging in conversation. Communication theory presented multiple theories on communication allowing me to make my own anylisis on them and how they are seen in the world today. Finally, my last class, Capstone gave me the oppurtunity to put everything together in one paper to prove my knowledge on what I have learned over the last four years. Being a communications major, my overall confidence when engaging in conversation has grown. Now, I feel as though I can speak with anyone, about any topic and portray my stance as well as accept the others stance as well.

The Villager

Recently, I have become a writer for the school newspaper named the Villager. This has been a great experience as I have been able to show my writing skills and explore an avenue I have not tried yet. Below you will find a link to a couple of my stories:

St. Paul's

Interning at St. Paul's was an overall great experience. I have met a lot of great people and have gained so much experience through my advisor, Jeff Dudley. Above you will see an event held at St. Paul's which I helped plan, decorate and work. This was a private auction event with over 500 people attending.
